This project is a residence and office space for an architect that provides flexible spaces for living, entertaining, working, and fabrication. These spaces are organized into two programmatic bars—a living area above and an atelier below—that together frame a shared multi-purpose courtyard space nestled into the sloping terrain of the south-facing site and shielded from the noise of a nearby freeway. Since it is intended to host a wide variety of activities and experiences over the course of any given day, the project is designed to afford its owner (as well as his employees, clients, and guests) a high degree of authorial control over its spatial, programmatic, and atmospheric qualities. This is primarily achieved through a system of motorized space-making elements that can be repositioned longitudinally within each programmatic bar.
