This project is a residence and office space for an architect that provides flexible spaces for living, entertaining, working, and fabrication. These spaces are organized into two programmatic bars—a living area above and an atelier below—that together frame a shared multi-purpose courtyard space nestled into the sloping terrain of the south-facing site and shielded from the noise of a nearby freeway. Since it is intended to host a wide variety of activities and experiences over the course of any given day, the project is designed to afford its owner (as well as his employees, clients, and guests) a high degree of authorial control over its spatial, programmatic, and atmospheric qualities. This is primarily achieved through a system of motorized space-making elements that can be repositioned longitudinally within each programmatic bar.

In the upper residential bar these space-making elements each consist of a folding aluminum framework mounted to a gantry beam spanning between two steel rails along either side, and covered in a

lightweight semi-opaque PTFE fabric. When the aluminum frames of a space-making element are folded down it takes the form of a full-height partition, capable of dividing the space of the upstairs bar into distinct spatial, programmatic, and atmospheric zones. However, these lightweight fabric and aluminum frames can also acrobatically fold up alongside the ceiling—providing a completely uninterrupted floor area whenever desired. A thickened zone of programmatic elements along the eastern wall of this space houses fixed kitchen and bathroom spaces in addition to a trundle bed and rail-mounted closet units that can be deployed into this open area or stowed away as needed. As the folding partitions are moved along the length of this program wall, specific activity spaces can be spontaneously created. In addition, these repositionable partitions include integral area and task lighting, audio speakers, and heating and cooling “air multiplying” fans that can be used to modify the atmosphere and comfort of these spaces.
